IMO Classes
The Carriage of dangerous goods and marine pollutants in sea-going ships is respectively regulated in the International Convention for the Safety of the Life at Sea (SOLAS) and the International Convention for the Prevention of pollution from Ships (MARPOL).
Relevant parts of both SOLAS and MARPOL have been worked out in great detail and are included in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code, thus making this Code the legal instrument for maritime transport of dangerous goods and marine pollutants. As of 1st January 2004, the IMDG Code will become a mandatory requirement.
Classification of dangerous goods
For all modes of transport (sea, air, rail, road and inland waterways) the classification (grouping) of dangerous goods, by type of risk involved, has been drawn up by the UNITED NATIONS Committee of Experts on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (UN).

Unterklasse 4.1: Entzündbare feste Stoffe
454 kg (1001 lbs) eines beliebigen Materials, das bei 20°C (68°F) oder weniger ein Gas ist, und 101,3 kPa (14,7 psi) Druck (ein Material, das einen Siedepunkt von 20°C (68°F) oder weniger bei 101,3 kPa (14,7 psi) aufweist), was:
1. ist bei 101,3 kPa (14,7 psi) zündfähig, wenn es sich um ein Gemisch aus 13 Volumenprozent oder weniger mit Luft handelt; oder
2. Hat einen Brennbereich bei 101,3 kPa (14,7 psi) mit Luft von mindestens 12 Prozent unabhängig von der unteren Grenze.
Unterklasse 4.2: Spontan brennbare Feststoffe
Selbstentzündliches Material ist ein pyrophores Material, das eine Flüssigkeit oder ein Feststoff ist, der sich innerhalb von fünf (5) Minuten nach Kontakt mit Luft entzünden kann, oder ein selbsterhitzungsfähiges Material, das bei Kontakt mit Luft und ohne Energiezufuhr zur Selbsterhitzung neigt.
Unterklasse 4.3: Gefährlich bei Nässe
Gefährlich Bei Nässe ist ein Material, das bei Kontakt mit Wasser selbstentzündlich werden oder brennbare oder giftige Gase mit einer Geschwindigkeit von mehr als 1 Liter pro Kilogramm des Materials und Stunde abgeben kann.
