The Port of Qingdao, situated at the Jiaozhou Bay of Shandong Peninsula, bordering on the Yellow Sea and facing Japan and Korea Peninsula across the sea, is a natural deep sea port with no situation and no freezing all the year round. The Port of Qingdao, with its advantageous geological location and favourable natural conditions, is an important transit port in the Yellow River valley and on the west coast of the Pacific Ocean, and is also a hub port for international trade and north-south sea borne transportation.
The Port of Qingdao is located at the starting point of Qingdao-Jinan Expressway and Jiaozhou-Jinan Railway convenient for cargo gathering and transporting. Besides its business coverage in the whole Shandong Province, the Port, with its vast economic hinterland, has extended its business to such provinces and regions as Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Gansu, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang and Sichuan.
The Port has established trade contacts with more than 450 ports in more than 130 countries and regions. Presently, the Port has 70 productive berths, among which 24 berths are deep sea water berths for vessels of over 10,000 dwt. In 1995, the throughput capacity of the Port reached 73 million tons, out of which, containers handled were 600,00 TEUs.
During the Eighth Five-Year Plan period, one berth in the second phase of Huangdao oil terminal for vessels of 200,000 dwt and 6 deep water berths in the first phase of Qianwan port area were completed. Among the 6 deep water berths, there are 2 general cargo berths for vessels of 20,000 dwt, one timber berth for vessels of 25,000 dwt, one multi-purpose berth for vessels of 50,000 dwt, one coal berth for vessels of 35,000 dwt and another coal berth for vessels of 50,000 dwt. the designed annual throughput capacity was increased by 34 million tons.
Special notice:
- 1:Arrival information
- The Master should advise the vessel s ETA to the general agent, or the local agent 72, 48 and 24 hours prior to the vessel s arrival at the pilot station. The ETA message should include the time and
date of the vessel s arrival and sea/fresh water drafts.
- The Master should also report details (including description, packaging, IMO code and gross/net
weight) of any dangerous cargo on board.If there is any change in the vessel's ETA or other
circumstances change, prior to arrival, the Master should send further messages.
- 2:Regulations:
- The Master should be aware of the following regulations when the vessel is under normal commercial operations:
- a. Before adjusting ballast water, lowering lifeboats, inspecting the main engine, testing/using radio
or painting the outer hull, the vessel should apply to the Harbour Master in writing.
- b. When taking bunkers or welding, in addition to first obtaining permission of the Harbour Master the
work must be done under the Harbour Master s supervision.
- c. There must be crew available at the top of the gangway to adjust it as required. A safety net must be
securely rigged under the gangway.
- d. The Master must arrange for a duty officer to be available to solve any potential problems during the
vessel s loading and discharging and he should work closely with shore personnel.
- e. Whilst at anchor, a duty officer must maintain a VHF watch on the nominated channel.
- 3:Restriction: Pilotage Compulsory. vessel Max. size : LOA 265m Beam 39m draft 14.0 m.
- Qindao Dagang: LOA 239m, draught 12.5m. Qianwan: Beam 40m, draught 14-20m.
- Huangdao oil terminal: draught 20m, no length or beam restrictions.

- 5: The port's fairways are divided into outer and inner fairways. There are six major inner fairways in Jiaozhouwan, all which meet the requirements of 20,000t vessels' all weather channel and 50,000t vessels' channel with tide. The main fairway is 45km in length, with width ranging from 1.8-27nm.
The fairway and channel are lit by 4 light towers, 3 pairs of leading markings, 18 light beacons, 1 light ship and 55 buoys. The Dagong Dao channel has a max depth of 10m plus tide, the Qianwan 200,000DWT channel has a depth of 18.5m plus tide and the coal channel 11.6m plus tide.

6: Foreign vessel shall, when abeam Chaoliandao Island, report the abeam time and the exact time of arrival at the port and meanwhile receive instruction from the competent authorities.
