Port of Varna

Two inland canals connect Varna East to Lake Varna, Lake Beloslav and Port of Varna West.In view of the stated safe canal depths, only vessels of draft less than 9,90 m (32'05") and airdraft up to 41,72 m. are allowed to Port of Varna West.

The existing depths of the ship berths and the approaches to them allow the handling of vessels of capacity up to 50 000 tonnes.

Port of Varna PLC offers full service - stevedoring, loading, discharging, forwarding, storage and various intermodal services.

In Port of Varna PLC operate 65 electric cranes and about 400 pieces of various ship, landside and warehouse port facilities. The port open-air storage area is 454 000 sq.m. and the warehouses have 76 000 sq.m.

It has a well-forked railway and road network. The existing port facilities allow the handling of practically all kinds of solid bulk, break-bulk, containerized and some liquid-bulk cargoes.

Varna East is situated deep into the Bay of Varna, at only 1 km distance from the centre of Varna town. It has excellent road and rail access and an international airport in vicinity (10 km), enabling to chose the best intermodal solutions.

The port is the main gate for Bulgaria's grain export and the unquestionable leader in container handling in the country. The only Passenger Terminal on the sea route between Istanbul and Odessa is here. It handles sugar, kaolin, metal scrap, molasses, granite, etc.

An integral part of Varna East structure is the Storage Base, also known as the Dry Port. It is a separate unit with a license for storage under Customs regime. Located at 5 km of the port, on a total area of 13 decars, it has 6 warehouses with identical structures and capacity. It specialises in storage of all types of cereals, soya meal, cocoa and general cargo.

Port of Varna - West

Total wharf length - 3223 m.

Max. depth - 10,50 m (34'05")

Suited and used for handling of bulk cargoes (coal, coke, phosphorite, apatite, ores, chemicals, sugar, cement, clinker, etc.), general cargoes in bags, packets and pallets and liquid bulks (liquid fertilizers, sulphur acid).

  • Soda Ash Terminal, capacity of 3000 t/24 hours
  • Urea Loading Terminal, capacity of 3000 t/24 hours
  • Bulk Cement Loading Facilities, capacity of 3000 t/24 hours
  • Sulphur Acid & Liquid Fertilizers Loading Facilities, capacity of 250 t/24 hours
  • Container Terminal with 2 gantries for 20' and 40' containers

Black Sea - Lake Varna Canal

Canal waterway: Black Sea - Lake Varna Canal (Canal 1- 2 nautical miles long)

Beloslav Lake Canal (Canal 2- 5 nautical miles long)

Port of Varna West - total length of the inner waterway- 14 nautical miles

Max. draft of ships passing through Canal 1 - 11,50 m (37 ft 08 in)

Max. draft of ships passing through Canal 2 - 09,90 m (32 ft 05 in)

Max air-draft: 41.72 m. Ships pass the canals in one direction only, with speed limitation of up to 6 knots. Ships pass past each other along the Lake Varna fairway. There are dwelling anchorages as well.

Vessels of over 200 m. LOA, 26 m. beam and 20,000 RT pass through canals in daytime only.

Port of Balchik

Total wharf length - 164 m.

Max. depth - 7,15 m (23'06")

Suited and used for handling of cereals, vegetable oils and live animals.

The Port operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The main services provided by the company are: stevedoring, cargo storage and port forwarding service. These are provided on dedicated terminals, multi-purpose berths and warehouses enabling specialised handling of containers, grain, bulk fertilisers, urea, cement, liquid chemicals, molasses, coal, clinker, ro-ro and general cargo.

The set of additional services includes: cargo shifting, weighing, sorting, lashing/unlashing, palletising, trimming, washing, painting, opening/closing of hatch covers, wagon fumigation, providing of freeze-proof material.

Also, Port of Varna offers a number of supporting services, such as supply of fresh water, telephone communications, electric power, collecting and treatment of waste from vessels, hiring of port equipment (mobile cranes, trucks, bucket loaders, etc.), full servicing to pleasure boats and tourist vessels visiting Port of Varna Marina Club.

The Passenger Terminal of Varna is the largest in Bulgaria and the only one on the sea route between Istanbul and Odessa. It offers a modern lounge to welcome the passengers and 2 berths capable to accommodate vessels up to 50,000 GT, with length of 240 m.

"Port of Varna" PLC is a state-owned company managed by a Board of Directors. The Executive Director is responsible for the daily management of the company. Port of Varna is within the system of the Ministry of Transport & Communications, under the control of the Executive Agency "Port Administration" and its Varna territorial unit.
