GlobalMET gets IMO status

26 Jun 2008

INTERNATIONAL maritime training institution body GlobalMET has been granted consultative status at IMO. The UN agency's Council approved the application last week. In a memo to GlobalMET members the body's executive secretary Rod Short says that while in London he received many expression of support for GlobalMET and its objectives, at IMO and at meetings with representatives of the International Association of Maritime Institutes, InterManager, Intertanko, Intercargo and the International Union of Marine Insurers.
He adds: “Expectations are high. All expressed strong interest in assisting with the development of MET and there are many opportunities for GlobalMET to make a significant and collaborative contribution towards ensuring the provision of education and training appropriate to the needs of the global industry, now and in the foreseeable future.”
He said that, having been granted consultative status, GlobalMET must now rise to the occasion and provide IMO - and the industry - with the input needed. He comments: “There is now more opportunity for the MET providers of all types - from the relatively small new institutions to those that are large and well established - to use their collaborative 'voice' in influencing the development of MET.”
